Great Heists of Gold, Diamonds and Money

WTC - $1 billion – 2011

WTC - $1 billion – 2011

A controversial one this one is. It is the ‘heist’ of the billion dollars’ worth of gold and silver that was held under the Word Trade Centre. In 2011 the World Trade Centre was attacked and destroyed, yet there was no news on the status of the precious metals that were located underneath it! After Comex announced that some of the metals were recovered but nowhere close to the amount allegedly held down there.

It makes our list as it is unsolved, controversial and who doesn’t love a good gold heist story!

Antwerp Diamond Centre - $100 million – 2003

Antwerp Diamond Centre - $100 million – 2003

Now if you are aware of the diamond trade, Antwerp is a major hub for diamond dealers and diamond cutters and has one of the largest diamond cutting houses and sorting houses in the world. So diamonds in Antwerp are plenty! When the thieves broke into the diamond centre, they opened so many boxes and took so many diamonds, that the next day, diamonds where scattered over the floors! The police eventually caught the thieves and locked them up from DNA evidence, but have never recovered their loot!

Makes our list from being an inside job with years of planning and executed by a group of nonviolent thieves. The original Oceans 11 maybe?

Museum of Science - $12 million - 2002

Museum of Science - $12 million - 2002

Well, this doesn’t really sound like a lot of money, however the execution was brilliant. The prize wasn’t cash, rather diamonds, which were on a brilliant display ion the museum. In having 24 hour security, 24 hour surveillance footage covering every single part of the exhibit , motion detectors and reinforced glass for the display cabinets…how did they do it? Well…no one has any idea! Nothing showed up on the surveillance footage, the guards didn’t see anything, no alarms being set off by the sensors and nothing was touched! However the glass cases were all empty.

This makes our list as no one has an explanation!

Central Bank of Brazil - $69 Million dollars – 2005

Central Bank of Brazil - $69 Million dollars – 2005

Now this is clever and painstakingly done with effort! A tunnel of 255 feet or 77 meters up, was created to hit the bank walls. How did they do it? Well some time earlier, the robbers had rented an apartment near the bank and started digging! After the tunnel they had to break 1 meter of reinforced steel and concrete to get into the vault and stole bank notes weighing approx. 3,500 kilos or 7,700 pounds! One of the crooks was discovered dead, and only $7 million dollars was ever recovered.

It makes our list for ingenuity and props for taking all that soil out of the area without anyone noticing and tunnelling old school to the bank!

Central Bank of Iraq - $1 Billion dollars - 2003

Central Bank of Iraq - $1 Billion dollars - 2003

Who pulled this off you ask? Well according to records, it was Saddam Hussein himself! The records go in a way that just before the Americans starting bombing Baghdad, he robbed his countries own bank for some funds for an eventual getaway! After the US troops storm the country and his palace, the found $650,000 in the walls of his palace, yet have not been able to find the rest! The way he got to the cash, is he simply wrote a hand written note to the bank and it took over 5 hours to start liquidating the funds from the bank!

It makes our list as all he had to do was write a letter!!!!
