It's Official: Ghostbusters Is A Huge Flop

"Criticism" An Understatement

"Criticism" An Understatement

To say that the reboot of Ghostbusters has received its fair share of criticism could very well be the understatement of the whole year.

It's copped plenty! In fact, even before it was released, so many people hated all over the trailer that the stars were often quoted defending outlandish criticisms like, "This movie will destroy my childhood" and other such nonsense.

As mentioned, people were brutally savaging the trailer, long before they eve had a chance at getting to the movie itself.

The trailer for the film actually became the single most disliked video on YouTube! Seriously.

Will We See A Sequel?

Will We See A Sequel?

It's probably not the type of history that the producers were hoping to make with the release of the new Ghostbusters. I mean really, it can't be that bad, can it?

To be fair to the film, it wasn't the worst one we've seen. But the box office takings have really only backed up what many were saying about the trailer.

What about that early talk of a sequel being a mere formality..???

“While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen,” head of Sony worldwide distribution, Rory Bruer, said when the film opened during the middle part of July, according to news.com.au.

But that was then - before we got to see the box office numbers...

Cold Hard Cash

Cold Hard Cash

The film has managed a touch under $180 million (US) globally, with the vast majority of that in North America, of course.

There's still a handful of countries in which the film has opened, namely Japan, France, and Mexico, among a few others, but that won't help the film get too far beyond $220 million, say the experts.

In other words, that's a failure. It might sound like a huge number until you consider that the production costs for the film (that's before marketing - which was stepped up to try and nullify negative perception of the trailer) were somewhere in the vicinity of $144 million....

Ouch! We might not see that sequel after all...
