25 Inspirational New Years Resolution Ideas

Get Fit

Get Fit

It's probably worth having this at the start simply because it must be among the most popular New Years resolutions. However, so many fail.

That's probably because as all those clich├ęd quotes you'll see on the wall at the gym will tell you, nothing worth doing is ever easy. Stick with it! Have some discipline this year!

Eat Healthier

Eat Healthier

Perhaps this goes alongside the first one. We all know what this one is about - it's just a matter of getting it done. Like all new habits and "lifestyle changes" this one requires some real application and commitment but the rewards are forever. Give yourself a goal of 120 days. After that time, you'll probably want to hold on to your new habits with all you've got!

Stop Procrastinating

Stop Procrastinating

Seriously, if there is ever a good time to stop putting off ticking a proverbial box, or to begin chasing a life goal, that time is NOW.

Improve Your Concentration

Improve Your Concentration

This might seem like and odd one to mention, however, it will help you on the way to achieving many of the other things on this list. Baby steps...

There might be more distractions these days but so too are there ways to sharpen your mind. You've still got the ancient meditation techniques (yes they do work and no, it doesn't have to be all New Age-y and weird) but you also have apps with the express purpose of training your mind to focus.

Make New Friends

Make New Friends

Of course, to make new friends you'll have to involve yourself in new circles, which could help you tick off a few of these points. You could just join the gym and meet new people there - there's a whole cross section of people who go to the gym, not just muscle-heads.

Of course, there are a myriad of other different ways too. Perhaps you could take up an old hobby you used to love that you've been meaning to get back in to. There, you'll meet people who are in to the same thing as you that you can hang out with ....typically, these are called friends.

Be More Active

Be More Active

You might think we've already covered this but not necessarily. Being more active just means getting out and doing something that you used to love (but probably still love now if you actually realized that there's nothing stopping you from doing it again other than your own negative thoughts) and rediscovering an active life. The fitness thing will probably follow.

Take Some Chances

Take Some Chances

We're not talking about going to the casino and putting it all on black here. It's more for those who might be lacking a bit of self-confidence or shyness. Take the new year as an opportunity to say that from now on, you will make your voice heard more often and take a more active role in your own life, whether it's at work, school, or in perhaps even in your own family.

Make More Money

Make More Money

Of course, we all want to make more money. Hell, even Bill Gates probably wants more money, if only so he can stretch his wealth further in terms of his philanthropic giving. Firstly, however, you have to identify a sound way to make that happen and then set about following through with that plan. Choose the new year to kick that plan in to action. Again - baby steps!

Be More Polite

Be More Polite

Of course, we all want to make more money. Hell, even Bill Gates probably wants more money, if only so he can stretch his wealth further in terms of his philanthropic giving. Firstly, however, you have to identify a sound way to make that happen and then set about following through with that plan. Choose the new year to kick that plan in to action. Again - baby steps!

Reduce Stress

Reduce Stress

Stress really is an insidious bastard with some legitimately negative manifestations that we often tend to ignore. But when you give it a bit of consideration, you're probably going to find that you don't deal with it as well as you perhaps could. Nobody is pointing a finger without blame here!

Whether through meditation or exercise, perhaps it's even as simple as ditching some of your superfluous obligations, remember that if it's happiness you're chasing during your time on this revolving rock, living with excess stress is totally counter-productive.

Be Happier With Your Life

Be Happier With Your Life

Sound easier said than done? Perhaps it is but that doesn't mean that it is too hard to deal with. Just take stock of what you have. Most of us have something in our lives that gives it meaning; a passion, a family, a partner, or even a dog! That's something to be happy about. There's no sense in comparing yourself to others or who you're afraid to be. Just be happy with what you have and that you have the power to be just a little bit better version of yourself this time tomorrow.

Get More Sleep

Get More Sleep

Let's make this one simple;

Using technology (your phone, iPad, anything with access to social media) in the hours or so before you go to bed severely decreases the chances of you getting to sleep and making that sleep quality. This in turn hikes your cortisol levels which literally makes you more stressed and makes it harder to lose weight (as well as other less obvious but equally important health issues).

You know what you have to do.

Stop Smoking

Stop Smoking

Do we even need to talk about why?

This is your year to kick the addiction. I hope I don't get sued by Nike for this one; just do it!

Watch Less TV

Watch Less TV

There are some great shows on TV and indulging has proven to help you relax and stress less. However, in moderation it's a great idea but the way a lot of us over-indulge ...well, there's a reason why they're called "programs", right?

A lot of what we watch tends pump information in to our brains that really, we could do without. It mind sound like conspiracy theorist stuff but be honest with yourself, is your TV habit making you any happier? Perhaps this is the year to watch less and do other, more productive things with your time...

....Like read more! Sure, you have to use your imagination more when you're reading from a book than you do when watching TV but that is the whole point really. You're consuming knowledge while exercising your brain - quite literally making yourself smarter (and without the advertisements telling you to buy breakfast cereal).

Find A Partner

Find A Partner

A lot of people go on Tinder just to see who is around and laugh at all the weirdos, but what if you used it (or a more serious dating site) to make this year the year where you find a real partner.... Hell, you could even do things the old fashioned way and strike up a conversation that doesn't involve some sort of cyber chat (remember them?).

Be Tidier

Be Tidier

Whether at home or the office, if you're the type of person with stuff everywhere and you're very unorganized, this has a tendency to permeate through other parts of your life, and has been proven to result in a negative hit to productivity and mood.

Get neater this year!

Dress Better

Dress Better

Many of us consider ourselves snappy dressers but the older we get, the less we show our style. It's easy to be comfortable as the years go on. You're internal dialog is all like ; Who am I trying to impress? Nobody, that's who!" but it can't hurt to rediscover a bit of style. You'll be amazed how this affects your confidence and mood.

Spend More Time With The People That Matter

Spend More Time With The People That Matter

We're using this family as an example here, not suggesting that you pop over to the Obama household (where do they live now that the White House belongs to that orange dude?) in 2017. We always just assume that family will always be there and so we can focus on other things and fall back on those who love us. But what is the point of doing anything unless you take the time to enjoy life with those important people?

Drink Less

Drink Less

It's funny when you take a step back and look at alcohol consumption. Often, so many of the drinks we consume are simply out of habit. Nobody is suggesting that you should cut out that occasional beer that you enjoy so much, just that perhaps you don't need to have one (or six-plus) as per your daily ritual.

You will be healthier if you change your habits. That's a fact!

Get Out Of Debt

Get Out Of Debt

I know, this one is easier said than done. However, set the goal of knocking off the your debt as soon as it is reasonably possible to do so. Be disciplined and get it done. The rewards afterwards will be felt beyond your hip pocket and bank account....

Save Money

Save Money

Once your debts are gone (or you can even do both at the same time) you can save some cash. There's a million and one different reasons to save cash and we're not going to list them all here, we're just going to suggest that 2017 is the year to get more disciplined and have more cash in the bank!

Learn A New Language

Learn A New Language

You know how it seems so easy for kids to learn a new language compared to adults? Have you ever considered that this is simply because kids don't have that fear of looking stupid or being judged for their mistakes? Take a child's attitude in to learning that language you've always wanted to learn and guess what? You will definitely succeed!

Volunteer

Volunteer

Guys, you can use this one to impress girls when you tell them that you give up your time for the shelter or those sick kids at the hospital, but the real rewards come in the way it will make you feel about yourself. Studies have shown that the act of volunteering is one of the most rewarding things that a person can do, and provides straight-up happiness for the volunteer. Perhaps this could be that missing link between you and happiness in 2017.

Adopt A Pet

Adopt A Pet

Adopt a pet that would otherwise not have a home and you get a loyal companion (unless you get a cat in which case you get a surly, moody asshat) at a fraction of the cost you would pay for a pure bred animal (which are inbred disasters anyway, right?).

The new year looks great with a new best friend!
