5 Little-Known Facts About E-Cigarettes

Liquid Nicotine

Liquid Nicotine

Of course, e-cigarettes are marketed as a healthy alternative to smoking cigarettes and in comparison, I guess they are. But it's important to remember that while they are smoke and tobacco free, they still contain nicotine. It's just in liquid form.

It's also full of other additives, so in that way, it's hardly something you'd call "healthy" unless of course, you're comparing it to the old fashioned cigarette.

Chemically Speaking

Chemically Speaking

The reasons to give up cigarettes are plenty, not the least of which is the fact that they contain in excess of 7,000 chemical, at least 60 of which have been proven to be carcinogenic, according to the American Lung Association.

However, many people have been admitted to hospital from poisoning from liquid nicotine too. Also, some types of e-cigarettes have been found to result in the user ingesting metals from the device that are also carcinogenic and toxic.

We Need Further Regulation

We Need Further Regulation

It really depends on to whom you speak when it comes to just how safe e-cigarettes actually are. And therein lies the problem; there is not nearly enough regulation in place to protect users from what is essentially, the unknown, until the proper testing has taken place.

The FDA in the United States is known to have a whole list of issues and questions unanswered, including mention of some e-cigarette cartridges containing a toxic chemical found in antifreeze.

They're Resuable

They're Resuable

Enough of the scary stuff for now. For those thinking about using them as a step towards giving up regular cigarettes, you might like to know that they're reusable, with just a little bit of maintenance.

It's a bit like a cell phone in that it comes with a USB charger. To top-up the liquid nicotine, you can either insert a new cartridge, or fill up the existing one.

Cost Effective?

Cost Effective?

I guess it will depend on where you live as to whether this will be a more cost-effective alternative to regular cigarettes. According to various reports on research, the total cost of the e-cigarette alternative should work out to be around half of regular cigarettes in the USA. Presumably, this would be less than half in places where the prices of regular cigarettes are astronomical (such as Australia) and may actually prove more expensive than the original in other parts (southeast Asia, for example).
