“Hitching a ride in Bosnia was faster than waiting for a bus,” she said as an example of her cultural insights.
“What I noticed is that in countries that are less affluent, people are a lot more open to helping strangers.”
She did encounter a few people in places in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, who would proposition her for sex in exchange for a ride. “I would have to keep saying no, and they didn’t care if I’d make up an excuse saying that I had a boyfriend or that I was married or religious".
“If they kept insisting, I’d threaten to jump out of the car and usually they’d stop. They don’t want death on their hands".
And the most hospitable people? Well, the answer may surprise you...
“Iranians really care a lot about women, and they view mothers in high regard,” she said.
“Everywhere I went, people would stop me on the street and ask if I needed a place to stay. Everyone travels with their families, so I felt safe. And they kept feeding me every hour. I was so stuffed!”
