Kickass Torrents Brought Down By Facebook And Apple iTunes

Kicking Ass

Kicking Ass

It is one of the internet's favorite sites for illegal downloading, and it's been brought to its knees!

Kickass Torrents has been shut down, and US authorities have arrested its creator, Artem Vaulin.

One Step Ahead

One Step Ahead

Vaulin has for years managed to stay one step ahead of authorities, but in a huge recent screw-up, he brought it all undone with some (it must be said) pretty sloppy decision making...

The decision allowed him to be tracked down and arrested with the help of Facebook and iTunes.

Facebook Fan Page

Facebook Fan Page

He created a Facebook fan page for the site. It's hard to tell if it was in pursuit of promotion or simply vanity, but it led to the site's downfall and his subsequent arrest.

Police chased up Zuckerberg and co for the details of the fan page, which they happily provided. The site was started by someone using a me.com email address, meaning that it was owned by Apple...

Paying Over Piracy

Paying Over Piracy

This is where it gets hilarious - if not, somewhat ironic.

After the authorities went to Apple, they discovered that the same email address was used to make purchases from iTunes!

Costly Mistake

Costly Mistake

From there, it was a matter of linking the info contained in the iTunes account to Vaulin's Bitcoin account...

...And the rest is history!

For the record, Kickass Torrents is estimated to be worth about US$54 million, with advertising revenue somewhere between 12 and 23 million.
