Rather than doing the typical bitching and moaning in response to Australian department stores K-mart and Target pulling Grand Theft Auto V from its shelves on account of violence and compromised values, gamers are circulating an online petition to have The Holy Bible pulled from shelves – on account of its sexist values and promotion of sexual violence.
A Change.org petition urging retailers to take the popular video game off its shelves gained nearly 50,000 signatures and led Australian department stores K-mart and Target to remove the product from sale earlier this month.
The petition was started by three women known only as Nicole, Claire and Kat, who claim to be survivors of sexual violence.
“It’s a game that encourages players to murder women for entertainment,” the petition reads. “The incentive is to commit sexual violence against women, then abuse or kill them to proceed or get ‘health’ points – and now Target are stocking it and promoting it for your Xmas stocking.”
This responding petition, titled “Withdraw The Holy Bible – this sickening book encourages readers to commit sexual violence and kill women”, launches a similar attack on the New Testament. Almost identical, actually…
“It’s a book that encourages readers to murder women for entertainment,” the petition reads. “The incentive is to commit sexual violence against women, then abuse or kill them to proceed to get ‘god’ points – and now Target are stocking it and promoting it for your Xmas stocking.”
The Australian Classification Board has said it’s up to individual retailers to decide which game they wish to stock and make available for sale, while also noting they introduced the R18+ category to gaming for a reason.
“This category was specifically introduced to ensure that high-impact content would be appropriately restricted to adults, and that minors would be protected from material that is not suitable for them,” the board said in response to the recent events.
Australian retailers are yet to comment on whether or not they are considering pulling The Holy Bible from their shelves. What do you think? Do you support the argument against the sale of Grand Theft Auto V, or do you think fans of the game have made a valid point about hypocritical traditional values?
