Beto O’Rourke, democratic presidential candidate for the upcoming 2020 election, has made disagreements with President Trump known in recent days. The disagreements center on Trump’s decision to send an additional 1,500 troops from the United States to the Middle East this past week. O’Rourke claims the decision is likely to lead to yet another war for the United States.

O’Rourke claims that President Trump is increasing tensions in the Middle East with the move to send in more troops to the region. O’Rourke points out that the United States is already engaged in war in several countries in the Middle East. These countries include Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Libya. O’Rourke explained his views in a Face the Nation interview that aired this past Sunday.

Trump explained to reporters last Friday at the White House that the United States would be sending an added 1,500 troops to the Middle East in a primarily protective effort in order to limit perceived threats from Iran. The President expressed his approval to the current Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan to deploy added military resources to the Middle East for protection against what is believed by the Pentagon to be an elevated level of threat from Iran against United States troops that are currently stationed in the region.

Trump gave reasoning for his decision by explaining that the United States needs protection in the region. Trump explained that the number of troops being sent represents a small number and is not meant to be interpreted as an offensive threat that could lead to increased violence, but rather a defensive measure to protect our troops and interests already present in the region.

CNN reported earlier in the month that Washington officials were engaging in debates regarding the most recent intelligence reports. The reports had information regarding whether Iran or the militias it supports were planning attacks to United States interests in the region, or if information in the reports likely indicated defensive actions meant to deter the actions of the United States.

Despite the additional troops being sent to the region, O’Rourke explained that the United States still should explore all options within our power in order to resolve this tension with peaceful resolutions.

O’Rourke explained that he has full confidence that there is a peaceful alternative to the situation in Iran. O’Rourke feels that the United States should explore everything in its’ power to pursue a resolution that will not create any violence in the region. O’Rourke also explained that a peaceful resolution is something that he would explore if he was elected president in the 2020 election. In the interview, O’Rourke championed himself as a person who would stick up for United States values, insist on the protection of our foreign allies, and protect the lives of all Americans if he was elected president. According to O’Rourke, it is important to maintain American values by first pursuing all options that could lead to peace in a situation such as the one that is currently taking place in Iran.
